Acupressure During Pregnancy

  Dr.Sarvotham’s Acupressure for Pregnancy Pain

The birth of a child is a blessing and a source of great joy. While it is a period of celebration and excitement for all those connected to the child, for the mother-to-be, however, the gestational period through the trimesters could be a period of discomfort and pain.

At Dr. Sarvotham’s clinic, acupressure therapy can be safely administered to minimize and lessen back pain during pregnancy, carrying the added advantage of curtailing the use of drugs and its related ill-effects on the fetus and the mother.

What causes back pain in pregnancy?

Back pain is a very common complaint during pregnancy. It is estimated that 80% of all pregnant women suffer from it to some extent. It is caused by a variety of factors, the major one being, of course, the extra weight which must be carried around during that time. There is also a tendency for existing injuries or history of back pain to resurface.

When does it start?

Backache in pregnancy can start as early as the first three months when the ligaments, which help to support the spine, begin to relax. This relaxation process is triggered by the changing hormonal levels of pregnancy and prepares the body for the developing fetus. It usually results in mild back pain, which is relieved by gentle exercise and plenty of rest.

By the end of the first trimester of pregnancy, the relaxation of the ligaments around the spine continues. During this period, backache is also caused by pressure from the growing baby and exaggerated curvature of the mother’s spine.
In the last trimester, persistent backache may be an indication of the onset of labor.

Does it disappear after delivery?

For the vast majority of women, backache associated with pregnancy will disappear after delivery. However, in some cases it may take a while for the pain to disappear completely depending on whether the delivery was normal or cesarean.

The therapy has shown wonderful results in reliving ‘pregnancy stress’, thus making the trimesters less discomforting and easy labor, with the advantage of nil side effects most of the modern gynecologist and obstetricians around the world strongly recommend acupressure as the safest form of therapy.
