According to Dr. V. Sarvotham,
the ideal treatment for a stiff
back, spondylitis, neck pain
or nerve related problems is
a few jabs in the back and walk
in the park. He is an acupressurist.
At his clinic, the men were
asked to remove their shirts,
but women were allowed to keep
their on. They were made to
turn around and sit with their
back towards him. Using his
bare hands, he jabbed them a
few times in the back. "It's
all in the nerves. A particular
ailment will stiffen a particular
nerve. I can feel the disturbed
flow of energy and know what
the problem is. I don't even
let my patients tell me what
is bothering them. I can make
this out on my own," he
told Bangalore Weekly.
His treatment is based on acupressure
which cures disease by applying
force on certain energy points
in the body. "I don't use
any of the acupressure tools
like rollers. I believe in my
fingers. The only tool I use
is a nail cutter to keep my
nails short," he explained.
Although Sarvotham has a degree
in Aeronautical Engineering,
and has worked at HAL, his healing
passions are something he developed
as a school child. "I used
to treat my friends and minor
sprains and aches." HAL
didn't satisfy his desire for
job satisfaction and he quit
to do a course in acupressure
in Singapore. "Over there
they saw me treat patients before
I finished my course and they
got jealous. They were using
all kinds of gadgets and I would
cure patients with just my fingers.
They gave me a certificate earlier
than usual and asked me to leave,"
he recollects. "I went
to England, Hyderabad, Mumbai.
In fact you name the place and
I have patients there."
The word spread and he was
swamped with people asking to
be cured. "I take only
medically rejected cases. At
the same time, cases I can't
cure I don't touch. I handle
cervical spondylitis, problems
with the back and neck, spasms.
Almost any nerve problem, I
can cure. The key to may treatment
is that I get to the root of
the problem and that is why
the results are faster. There
will be no surgery and I shall
give no medicines," he
says categorically.
His list of clients is very
impressive.

Celebrities, politicians,
executives and even doctors
who come for treatment.
"I have never advertised
and all my publicity is
through word of mouth.
I have treated the Governor's
wife, Kharge (a politician)
and even Ramakrishna Hegde.
(One of his patients is
Ajit Saldanha, food critic
for the Asian Age, and
writer for Bangalore weekly.)
I never kept my patients
cards and names. But now
my sons who are joining
me are keen on buying
a computer and maintaining
a database." He is
now quite happy to hand
over his practise to his
sons who recently held
a camp at Hindupur and
were swamped. "The
cops had to resort to
a lathi charge to keep
the crowds in control,"
recalls Vijay, his son.

"I am planning to
expand my business. I
have a place in Germany
where they have been asking
me to come for ages now.
I shall hand over my work
to my sons and maybe move
there," says Sarvotham.
