Dr. Sarvotham’s Acupressure Clinic was started by Dr. V. Sarvotham, Sr. in 1975, and officially established in 1983. He enhanced the skills gained in the basic “Diploma in Acupressure” from Singapore, with years of experience, specializing in spine and nerve related disorders. He then passed on his valuable expertise to his two children, Vinay and Vijay. The Clinic focuses on certain specific disorders, the treatment of which has been fine-tuned over three decades.

Acupressure is an age-old practice, which is considered to be the simplest and most effective form of physical therapy, with no side effects. There are several methodologies in the practice of acupressure. For example, Shiatsu, Sujok, reflexology and others are all based on the principles of acupressure. Each one claims to cure a variety and range of disorders and diseases.

The demanding lifestyle of corporate and competitive businesses today has led to high levels of psychological stress and physical strain. Back pain, fatigue, spondylitis, headaches, anxiety, restlessness, lack of concentration, sleep deprivation are all common problems.
To treat these, Dr. Vijay has designed a combinational therapy of Acupressure and Cranio, learnt in Switzerland, to suit individuals with different life styles, thus minimizing stress and other related disorders and dysfunctions in the shortest possible time.

Tips from Dr. Vijay Sarvotham to deal with common problems;

BACK PAIN
– Lower, upper or mid back pain is seen in all age groups, from the age of 13 onwards. Causes could range from poor posture, excessive stress, strain, lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, to sleeping disorders, poor diet, etc.

Advice – People with demanding lifestyles should maintain a balanced diet and proper seated posture (straight backed chairs with a short base, so back rests flat against the back of the chair and the feet are on the ground). It is important to get up and walk every 20 minutes or at the least to get up and sit down again. Avoid crossing the legs, and cut out any strenuous exercise until the pain and discomfort are minimized.

Obesity plays a major role, but losing weight rapidly could cause more discomfort. Weight loss is a science and must be done gradually. Take the advice of a trained nutritionist.

Today, many offices have in-house gyms and fitness centers. It is necessary to assess one’s state of physical fitness and flexibility before using the machines, doing aerobics, etc.

Starting an exercise regime:

In Week 1, begin with a relaxed walk for 20 minutes and increase the pace and the time gradually over the next four weeks. Swimming is strongly advised in week 2, with mild free-style stretches. If obesity and age are major concerns, then stretches may be carried out on the bed. After week 4, use the services of a trained physical fitness professional and seek the advice of a dietician for a good, balanced diet.

CERVICAL SPONDYLITIS (Neck Pain)

These symptoms in the neck region could be pain, discomfort, stiffness, tiredness, fatigue and giddiness. This condition could be due to long hours in front of the computer, degenerative changes, stress, age, obesity, sleep deprivation, bad posture etc... When an individual faces such discomfort and pain, exercise is not advised. However, Dr. Sarvotham recommends the use of a pillow, especially when sleeping on one’s side. The pillow contours the neck compensating the gap between the shoulder and the neck for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Avoid lying down and watching television or reading books. Walking and swimming are most effective exercises in releasing tension in the neck. Sitting for long stretches may cause great discomfort. If so, take frequent breaks. These are simple precautions. Professional assessment and treatment may be required for long-term cures.
